What’s the Number One Reason People Go Camping?
Time outside, relaxation, and family fun are all great reasons to go camping, but a recent survey from camping website, Hipcamp, found that mental health is the top motivator when it comes to this beloved pastime. Results show that nearly 40 percent of respondents say camping provides mental health relief. Another surprising statistic is that more people (36 percent) plan to go camping with their pets rather than their children (29 percent) or their parents (5 percent), but only 1 percent will be taking along a cat. Who’s the top choice for a camping companion? More than 70 percent of respondents prefer to travel with their romantic partners.

Want to visit the top RV parks, campgrounds, and glamping destinations? USA Today announced the winners of its annual 10Best awards in the travel category, which gives readers the chance to vote for their favorite destinations in the U.S. The award for the best campground went to Inn Town Campground in Nevada City, California, which offers scenic campsites. Jellystone Park Pelahatchie in Mississippi was named the top RV park, thanks to its waterfront sites and splash park. Conestoga Ranch in Garden City, Utah, was picked as the top glamping destination, offering a unique opportunity to stay in a pioneer wagon with over-the-top amenities.

Parks Canada welcomed a new campground to the national park system with the opening of the Mkwesaqtuk/Cap-Rouge Campground in Cape Breton Highland National Park. Known for its rugged waterfront canyons and cliffs, this park has easy access to Nova Scotia’s popular Cabot Trail scenic drive. The 42 walk-in tent campsites are designed to offer a remote backcountry feel, while providing front-country amenities. Five oTENTik sites are available, which provide A-frame cabins for a glamping experience.

More than $103 million in funding will be given to wildfire combat efforts, thanks to President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Plan. According to Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland, wildfire seasons have “become longer, more intense and more dangerous,” making protections necessary. Funds will develop wildfire science, support rehabilitation efforts, and help reduce fire risk through fuels management work. More than 2 million acres will receive fuel treatments this year, an increase of 30 percent from last year. Additional funds will help support the physical and mental wellbeing of wildland firefighters.
