War in Ukraine Spikes Gas Prices
As the U.S. average for gasoline breaks four dollars a gallon, many in the nation are wondering how high prices will go. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has led to a significant spike, with prices rising 13 percent due to the international instability. This comes alongside a natural seasonal increase in demand. The world crude oil market has seen prices rise from 74 dollars a barrel in December of 2021 to more than 118 dollars a barrel in recent days. If the U.S. opts to stop receiving imports of crude oil and petroleum from Russia, the market could be squeezed even further, with prices potentially topping six dollars a gallon. Releasing more oil from international strategic reserves could calm the pressures.
