Outdoor Recreation Grows in Numbers and Diversity
The Outdoor Industry Association (OIA) and Outdoor Foundation (OF) released a joint study on outdoor recreation in the U.S. The report found that participation in outdoor recreation in 2022 grew by 2.3 percent—meaning more than 168 million people in the U.S. embraced outdoor activities. The study also shows that outdoor recreation is becoming more diverse, with an increase in Black, Hispanic, and LGBTQIA+ participants last year. Other findings include an increased interest in camping, fishing, sport climbing, and skateboarding, as well as a growing number of seniors getting outside.

Thor Motor Coach announced updates to its Axis, Compass, Delano, Gemini, Tiburon, and Vegas motorhomes heading into 2024. Axis and Vegas, the RV manufacturer’s Class A motorhomes, will add new floor plan options featuring more sleeping space, updated cabinetry and carpet, and a standard solar panel system. The Compass and Gemini Class B RVs will also receive interior upgrades, while the Delano and Tiburon Class C RVs will offer a 200-watt solar charging system.

Canadian-based truck camper manufacturer Overland Explorer Vehicles (OEV) announced updates and possible additions to its 2024 lineup. The company plans to release shell models of some of its best-selling campers. This option gives DIYers the ability to customize their truck campers with the reliable framing and construction of an OEV rig. While most shell models will come with nothing more than an interior door, others will come standard with propane, plumbing, a furnace, battery storage, a mattress, and more. OEV also plans to debut a new truck camper in 2024. The 14-foot rig will feature a cutaway cab chassis to allow campers to maneuver from the cab to the camper interior without exiting the truck.

Electric vehicle manufacturer Rivian cut a deal with Tesla to utilize the company’s Supercharger network beginning in 2024. This deal will allow R1S and R1T owners to charge their vehicles at Tesla charging stations in Canada and the U.S. using an adaptor. Starting in 2025, Rivian plans to update the R1S and R1T charge ports so that you won’t need an adaptor when charging with Tesla’s network. The deal comes as the electric vehicle industry pushes for more collaboration that allows easier access to charging stations for all EV drivers.
