Distracted Driving Is a Real Danger on the Roadway
Nearly 3,000 people a year are killed and more than 400,000 are injured due to distracted driving, which is any action that takes your eyes and focus away from the roadway. Not surprisingly, cell phones are the primary type of diversion—speaking on a phone doubles the risk of accidents, and texting increases the risk by as much as 600 percent. Activities inside the vehicle, such as reaching for objects, applying makeup, interacting with passengers, and eating can also intrude upon drivers’ attention.
