Which National Parks Are the Deadliest?
Unfettered access to epic landscapes comes with inherent risks. Outforia submitted a Freedom of Information Act to the National Park Service to find out the number of deaths at each national park. The Grand Canyon is the deadliest national park with 134 deaths between 2010 and 2020, mainly caused by heat-related medical emergencies. Yosemite and Sequoia national parks have stunning scenic overlooks and waterfalls, which lead to deaths from falls and drownings. In the Great Smoky Mountains, driving is the most dangerous activity, likely due to the number of people who visit this popular park each year. The same is true for Yellowstone, though the park’s geothermal features also pose a natural threat.
