Is It Glamping or Is It Camping?

The Huttopia chain of vacation resorts defies definition, offering more comfortable accommodations than traditional camping, without going overboard on the glamping amenities—or the price. The goal is to connect visitors to nature while providing a more comfortable, yet simple camping experience. Huttopia offers both tent sites (to bring your own) and canvas-sided cabins, complete with kitchens, bathrooms, and large porches. With 47 locations in the U.S., Canada, and Europe, Huttopia is looking to add 10 to 15 locations in the U.S.

Jeep’s First All-Electric SUV to Debut in 2023

Jeep announced plans to introduce its first all-electric SUV in 2023, with few details. CEO Carlos Tavares says this new model will be the first of many, with others coming in 2024 and 2025. Teaser images show the fully electric SUV will fit between the Compass and Cherokee and will utilize a “skateboard-style architecture” instead of an existing chassis, with battery packs and motors below the floor. All-wheel drive capabilities are expected to be available. Jeep currently offers a plug-in hybrid Wrangler 4xe and will start offering the plug-in hybrid Grand Cherokee later this year.

Is Your Portable Generator on This Danger List?

The Consumer Product Safety Commission plans to continue investigations and may issue new safety rules for portable generators. Deaths remain around 80 per year, despite voluntary guidelines put in place for manufacturers. While some instituted safety changes, others have not. A recent briefing package outlines which companies follow the guidance. New research shows nearly 100 percent of deaths are preventable if manufacturers follow the hazard-mitigation requirements. Until then, more awareness of carbon monoxide dangers can help prevent campground casualties.

Hikers to See Rate Increase for Grand Canyon Camping

Expect to pay more if you plan to go backcountry camping at the Grand Canyon. The National Park Service increased fees from $8 to $12 per person, per night, in addition to the $10 backcountry permit fee. The charge will also increase for stock animals carrying campers and supplies, including mules. This rate increase helps fund permit and background information offices. Apply early for the best chance to receive one of the coveted permits, as two-thirds of requests cannot be filled.
